Conveyor Technical Guides & Project Planning Resources

Use these CCL engineering guides to choose a conveyor, prepare your project brief and compare quotations. The resources bring together product selection, budgeting, installation planning and examples of completed systems from our Loughborough team.

Choose a conveyor around the product

Start with the smallest and largest items, their weight and underside. A continuous belt can support products that would be unsuitable for rollers. Cartons and totes with suitable flat bases may suit roller transport. Pallet handling needs a separate review of runners, orientation, loading and transfer direction. The route, cleaning requirements and required flow then help define the specification.

Prepare a useful engineering brief

Record minimum and maximum product dimensions, individual and total loads, normal and peak throughput, transfer heights and the available footprint. Include a layout sketch and photographs of the product underside and existing machinery. Explain where items must stop, queue, be inspected or transfer to another machine. If a measurement is unknown, flag it for discussion rather than guessing.

Plan the equipment and installation budget

Compare quotations against the same scope. Separate conveyor equipment, controls, delivery, unloading, installation and commissioning. A standard horizontal belt conveyor calculator is useful for an initial equipment budget; a bespoke line needs a review of the full route and machine interfaces.

See how CCL approaches demanding installations

Morningside, Loughborough: a fully enclosed powered roller conveyor bridge handles 1,500 kg pallet loads across an approximately 10-metre span without intermediate external support stands. The project included engineering calculations, the control system and mechanical installation.

North West England: a fully enclosed twin-tier conveyor bridge with lift transfers connects buildings approximately 40 metres apart across uneven ground. The engineering addressed structural load sharing, movement, alignment and transfer interfaces.

These dimensions and capacities describe the individual installations. Each new project is specified around its own loads, structure, operating conditions and transfer requirements.

Bring mechanics, controls and site work together

A conveyor is one part of the material flow. Agree how adjacent machines exchange signals, what happens when the next process stops, where products accumulate and how operators access the equipment. Include the required drawings, acceptance checks, installation responsibilities, handover documents and maintenance access in the project brief.

Discuss your application with CCL

Send your layout, product details and target output to our Loughborough team. You do not need a finished specification to start: we can help identify the measurements and engineering decisions needed for a quotation.
