PVC Belt or Modular Belt Conveyor: Which Should You Choose?
PVC and plastic modular belts can both be useful in production and packing lines. The right choice depends on the product, transfers, operating environment and maintenance needs. Start with the task the conveyor must perform, then select the belt and frame together.
Start with the products and transfers
A PVC belt provides a continuous conveying surface and can be a practical option for suitable cartons, components and packaged products. Belt finish and grip must suit the product and the direction of travel. A smooth horizontal application and an incline may need different belt specifications.
Plastic modular belts use interlinked modules driven by sprockets. Available surfaces include closed-top and open-grid designs. Belt pitch and opening size affect product support, so the smallest item and the transfer gap need checking before choosing a belt.
See CCL’s belt conveyors and plastic modular belt conveyors for the available design approaches.
Define cleaning and operating conditions
Tell your supplier whether products are dry, wet, oily, hot or chilled, and which cleaning methods and chemicals will be used. A modular open-grid belt may help with drainage where the product and process allow it. A closed surface may be needed where openings would not support the product correctly.
The belt alone does not determine washdown suitability. Frame construction, drainage, access and the rest of the conveyor specification need to match the process. Food-contact requirements should be stated explicitly for the intended application.
Consider the complete route
Straight sections, bends, inclines and transfers need to work as one system. Suitable radius modular belts can accommodate curves, while flights or sidewalls may be considered for certain inclines. Neither option removes the need to review product stability, available space and loading arrangements.
Compare maintenance and project scope
Damaged modular belt sections can often be replaced locally, but pins, sprockets, wear strips and overall belt condition still need inspection. For either belt type, agree access for cleaning and maintenance, recommended spares and the handover documentation.
CCL’s standard belt conveyor calculator prices the standard PVC range; it does not price bespoke modular belt systems. Compare quotations using the same product, throughput, controls and installation requirements.
