Conveyor Lead Times and Installation: A UK Buyer’s Guide

A conveyor delivery date is only one part of getting a new line into production. Buyers also need time for specification, drawing approval, factory testing, installation and handover. This guide explains how to plan those stages with Central Conveyors in Loughborough.

How long does a conveyor take to manufacture?

CCL’s published typical lead time for its standard horizontal PVC belt conveyor range is 4–6 weeks from order. Confirm the current programme in your quotation before booking other work. This is a standard conveyor lead time, not a promise that a complete installed automation project will be operational within that period.

Bespoke conveyor systems are programmed individually. The layout, purchased components, controls, testing requirements and site access all affect the schedule. Give CCL your required operational date at the enquiry stage so the team can assess the whole programme.

What should be agreed before placing an order?

Define the smallest and largest products, maximum item weight, total conveyor load and required throughput. Include infeed and discharge heights, available floor space, cleaning conditions and interfaces with existing machinery. Distinguish the desired delivery date from the date when production needs to start.

For quotations, ask which stages are included: design, manufacture, controls, factory testing, delivery, unloading, mechanical installation, electrical work, commissioning and training. Make responsibilities and exclusions clear before comparing prices.

How do costs change when installation is included?

CCL’s published starting price of £2,390 excluding VAT is for a supply-only standard horizontal conveyor, 1,000mm long with a 300mm belt. It is not the price of an installed conveyor line. Longer or wider equipment, specialist belts, controls, transfers and site work change the total. Request a quotation for your complete scope.

What happens between design approval and delivery?

CCL prepares drawings for approval before manufacture. Review the proposed layout against the actual building, adjacent equipment and operator access. Flag changes to products or throughput before drawings are approved, as later changes may affect both price and programme.

Agree the factory test requirements early. Representative products, agreed operating sequences and acceptance criteria help both teams assess the equipment before delivery. Confirm whether you need to attend the test and who will supply samples.

How should you prepare your site for installation?

Give the project team a route from the unloading point to the final position, including doorway dimensions, height restrictions and any mezzanine access. Identify the available power and other services, the equipment to be connected and the periods when production can stop. Agree who handles unloading, positioning and service connections.

A phased installation may be worth discussing where production must continue, but its suitability depends on the layout and interfaces. Do not assume every project can be completed over a weekend; confirm a realistic installation window with the engineering team.

Can a new conveyor work with existing equipment?

CCL can plan conveyor transfers and controls around existing machinery. Provide machine drawings, operating sequences and the relevant technical contacts early. Mechanical fit is only part of the work: product spacing, start and stop behaviour, downstream availability and control interfaces also need to be agreed.

What should be included in handover and aftercare?

Agree the handover requirements before installation: operating information, maintenance documentation, spare-parts details, operator familiarisation and the acceptance process. Discuss planned maintenance and support around how intensively the conveyor will be used and the conditions in which it will operate.

What should you send CCL to get started?

Send product dimensions and weights, throughput, conveyor length and working heights, a layout or photographs, your site location and the required operational date. Explain whether you need supply only or a complete installed system. CCL designs and manufactures in Loughborough and can discuss the specification, controls, testing and installation as one project.
