Waste and Recycling Conveyors: Two Historical Installations (2008)

From the Central Conveyors archive. Originally documented in April 2008; restored here as a historical account.

Central Conveyors' April 2008 archive described two recycling installations: an upgrade for Chelmsford Borough Council and a separate system at a private recycling plant in Derbyshire.

At Chelmsford, a robust chain-driven conveyor carried material from a loading pit to the hopper serving an existing sorting line. A tractor could tip into the pit, changing the loading arrangement from direct positioning over the hopper.

Flights supported material on the inclined section. Because the loading pit was exposed to the weather, the installation also included a drainage pump. The original account recorded emergency-stop and pull-cord provisions.

The Derbyshire installation combined a long belt conveyor for manual picking and sorting with an inclined chain conveyor. After the picking section, the flighted incline transferred material into a compressor or baler hopper.

These installations addressed different parts of the recycling process: receiving material, presenting it for manual selection and transferring it into downstream equipment. The archive does not provide throughput figures or quantified operating savings.

Together they document Central Conveyors' experience connecting material-handling stages within recycling facilities. Current waste-handling projects require their own assessment of material mix, loading conditions, access and downstream machinery.
