Bespoke Conveyor Solution for Furniture Packaging

The Client

A well-known British sofa manufacturer and retailer specialising in high-quality 3-piece suites and furniture. The company required an efficient system to prepare their products for delivery to customers.

The Challenge

The client needed a robust conveyor system that could effectively support their packaging process, specifically for wrapping furniture in protective plastic film prior to delivery. The solution required durability for continuous operation in a manufacturing environment, with minimal maintenance requirements and maximum safety for operators who would need to stand on the conveyor during the wrapping process.

The Solution

Central Conveyors designed and implemented a bespoke conveyor system with the following specifications:

  • Mild steel construction with a powder-coated paint finish for durability and professional appearance

  • Acetal plastic modular belt system selected for exceptional longevity

  • Positive drive mechanism featuring sprockets along the drive and tension shaft at 100mm intervals, similar to a bicycle chain operation

  • Full-length emergency pull cord for immediate stoppage in case of safety concerns

  • Low-speed operation to minimise risks to operators

The modular belt design represents a significant advantage over conventional fabric-based belts. Though initially more expensive, the acetal plastic components are approximately five times more durable than PVC or polyurethane alternatives. Additionally, the modular design allows for targeted repairs of damaged sections rather than complete belt replacement, substantially reducing lifetime maintenance costs.

The Results

The implemented solution delivered multiple benefits to the client:

  • Enhanced operational longevity through the use of premium materials that offset higher initial investment

  • Reduced maintenance downtime and costs due to the modular repair capability

  • Improved safety features appropriate to the operational requirements

  • Reliable positive drive system that eliminates the slippage issues common with fabric-based alternatives

  • Fit-for-purpose design that precisely meets the specific needs of furniture packaging

The system continues to serve the client effectively, providing a dependable platform for their furniture packaging process with minimal maintenance requirements.
